Restoring Local Control
- Allow local governments to regulate the carry of guns on municipal property owned or leased by local governments.
- Senate Bill 352 introduced last year would have ensured this.
Protecting Survivors of Domestic Violence
- Align Michigan Law with existing federal law, which would prohibit abusers convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence offenses from possessing guns for 8 years.
- Existing House Bills 5371 and 5372 / Senate Bills 678 and 679 submitted last year would have accomplished this.
Gun Violence Prevention and Research
- Establish a gun shot wound data accumulation research program, in order to develop an accurate report of the state of gun violence as it exists within Michigan.
- Establish funding for a gun violence prevention program.
- House Bill 5174 introduced last year would have created a GVP in Ingham County.
Crisis Intervention Law
- Enact ‘CI’ laws to prevent individuals in crisis from resorting to misuse and/or abuse of a firearm.
- Existing Senate Bills 856, 857, and 858 introduced in the previous year would have accomplished this.
Magazine Capacity Limits
- Restriction of selling and/or possessing a magazine capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition.
- House Bills 5627 and 5628 / Senate Bills 785 and 786 introduced last year would have accomplished this.
Safe Storage
- Require firearms to be properly secured to prevent accidental injury/death when the firearms could be accessible to minors.
- Creation of a state tax credit for purchase of and/or inspection of an existing gun safe.
- Exempt firearm safety devices (including locks and safes) from the sales tax.
- Exempt firearm safety devices (including locks and safes) from the use tax.
- House Bill 5066/ Senate Bill 550, House Bill 5067 / Senate Bill 551, House Bill 5068 / Senate Bill 552 introduced over last year would have established much of this, with the exception of a tax credit.
Universal Background Checks
- Require expanded universal background checks on all guns sales.
- House Bills 4869, 4870, and 4871 / Senate Bills 454, 455, and 456 introduced last year would have accomplished this.
Prohibit Guns in MI Capitol Building
- Bans guns in legislative office buildings and the MI State Capitol Building.
- House Bills 4023 and 4024 / Senate Bills 34 and 35 introduced over last year would have enacted this.
