Labor Policy and Career Training

"In order for Michigan to succeed in the 21st century, we must plan and put into place the tools to be competitive for the next 100 years. We must rebuild Michigan from the people up."
-Mark Bignell

The Michigan Dream Initiative
Establishment of a multistage career education/training assistance program that will pool together and integrate all of Michigan's various career training programs under one single umbrella program.
  • Stage 1 of the program will provide financial assistance for public service professions, which have a great impact on the quality of societal services and have been facing shortfalls in recruitment and retention. These first four professions stage 1 will assist with are teaching, social work, nursing and public safety (police, firefighting and EMS).
  • Each consecutive following stage will expand on the professions targeted and will eventually expand Michigan's total professional talent pool and will ultimately attract new private entrepreneurs and new investment.
  • The final stage of the program will establish a statewide Michigan Promise Program, on par or better than the Promise Programs of other states like New Mexico, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New York, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Washington.

Right to Work Reform
Repeal all Michigan Right To Work laws and craft legislation which would reinforce protections for workers organizing a union, from employment termination, discrimination, and/or employer penalization or retaliation.

Prevailing Wage
Restore and modernize Prevailing Wage Laws, protect and respect municipal ordinances for prevailing wage.

Labor Equity
Equitable and updated labor protections for women, LGBT+ and minorities, because all people, regardless of origin deserve to be compensated equitable to their peers for the same work performed.

Occupation Safety Regulation Reform
Reform occupation safety and workplace regulations to promote greater safety and more humanization among several professions within Michigan.
For example, it's imperative that a profession such as nursing have sensible nurse to patient ratios and stricter defined shift limits throughout the work week, in order to foster both greater occupational safety and exponentially improve patient safety.
In another example, it's crucial to the educational and developmental outcomes of our children, that a profession like teaching have more sensible teacher/aide ratios to total students.

Statewide Defined Benefits System Established
In order for our state to attract and retain the best public service professionals, it is crucial that Michigan bolster the capacity of public service professionals to retire within Michigan.
I propose that Michigan establish a statewide guaranteed defined benefits program for Michigan public service professionals and Michigan public service organizations to buy into.
By guaranteeing a statewide program that all public service employees and organizations can by into, the risks and costs are aggregated across a much larger pool and thereby greatly minimized.
